“Naruto Vol. 13” Manga Review

Hey, Frayed Wire readers! This is a review Josh made on his old site, but is now being moved here!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Naruto, the biggest thing in anime/manga since Dragon Ball Z. Naruto is about a kid ninja and his friends that live in the village of Konohagakure. The main character, Naruto, strives to eventually become the Hokage, or the leader of Konohagakure. The special thing about Naruto though, is the Nine-Tailed Fox demon that lives inside of him. It was sealed into him by a previous Hokage, because the demon was once a living monster that threatened to destroy the village. Sealing it was one of the only ways to stop it, and the Hokage had to die in order to do it.

People hate Naruto throughout his childhood because of how he houses the demon that the Hokage had to sacrifice himself to stop. Eventually though, he is accepted by others and most of all his teacher.

That’s pretty much the plot of the first chapter of volume one. I’m not going to explain every little detail that happens between then and volume 13, but here are the basics: Naruto is part of a three-man squad of students. With him is Sasuke, the tough kid from the elite Uchiha clan. He lives only to kill his older brother, Itachi, who wiped out the entire Uchiha clan in one night (except for himself and Sasuke). Sakura is Naruto’s other team member. She has bright pink hair and a crush on Sasuke. She isn’t so great at fighting, but she’s the smartest of the three.

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are all led by their sensei, Kakashi. He has a droopy eyelid and is always late for meetings, but he’s a great ninja and a loveable character.

(Here’s a picture of Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi from the anime)

Anyway, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura have been participating in the Chunin Selection Exams for a while at the point of volume 13. The “Exams” are really more of a life-or-death series than exams. At volume 13, Naruto and the other kid ninja that haven’t been eliminated yet are finishing up the last part of the Exams – a tournament of fighting. Naruto has finished his match already (he won), and now him and the rest of the massive crowd is eagerly awaiting Sasuke’s match against the murderous Gaara. Gaara carries a gourd filled with sand on his back, and he uses the sand to fight.

Sasuke shows up in time for his fight. He hits Gaara with the Chidori, a jutsu (a sort of magical spell/attack used by ninjas) that he surprisingly learns learns from Kakashi. Gaara goes sort of crazy, and the whole exam is suddenly cut short when the Sand and Sound village ninja invade Konohagakure (the Leaf village).

Volume 13 has a decent amount of action in it, and it manages to be quite an entertaining installment in the Naruto manga series. It ends with a good cliffhanger, although those who have been watching the anime on Toonami already know how things turn out. I myself definately do, as I have read nearly every Naruto manga there is (even the ones that haven’t officially been released in America yet) thanks to a nice website called Naruto Manga Returns. I think I can safely say that volume 13 is one of the best.

If you’re going to start reading Naruto, start with volume 1. Starting with book 13 would not be the best idea, unless you feel comfortable with the story up until then because you keep up with the anime. But for those who feel prepared to pick up volume 13, this is a very good read.

Final Score: 9 out of 10

There are honestly a lot of weak comments on this post. Come on, people! And nggak ngerti to you too, timothy. The only reason your comment got approved is the (small) chance that it’s in a foreign language.

I really like the “naughtiness” of Naruto. I like his character. I don’t like the silence of Sasuke.
