“Without a Paddle” Movie Review

Hey, Frayed Wire readers! This is a review Josh made on his old site, but is now being moved here!

Not too long ago I watched Without a Paddle, a nice 98 minute film made in 2004. It didn’t win any noteworthy awards, but it’s still a good movie to watch if you’re bored.

It’s about 3 friends to get together after the 4th one dies, who go on a trip to find something the forth guy wanted to find. After the funeral, they find their old treehouse. Inside the treehouse they find the treasure map that this 4th friend apparently left for them. The treasure map leads to the stolen loot of some famous criminal, (how the friend figures out where the loot is, I don’t know). The treasure map was put there a year ago when Billy (the 4th friend who dies) wanted everyone to go on a big trip to find the spot, but since one person couldn’t go, the trip was cancelled. And so, the 3 remaining friends embark on a canoe trip to find the treasure that their friend cared so much about.

The movie is actually a comedy, even though I kind of made it sound serious. The friends are quite reckless (except for one), and they get into a lot of trouble. There’s bears, crazy hillbillies, and waterfalls, and the guys have their friendship tested through all of it.

The story is actually very well thought-out. I was surprised, since I though this would be a mindless comedy. But I was wrong. The story has many things that come back later on in the film. Most importantly though, they come in a clever way.

Without a Paddle isn’t magnificent, but it has comedy and a surprisingly well thought-out story. It’s worth a rental.

Final Score: 6.5 out of 10
