What to Expect From E3 09 – Microsoft

Among the hardcore crowd of gamers, Microsoft has the leg up over its main competitor, Sony. However, not many first party games from Microsoft have been announced for this year. They’ve got Halo 3: ODST, but what else really? And ODST is a mere expansion rather than a full game. As a result, I expect third party developers to steal the show from Microsoft in terms of Xbox 360 games coming out in 2009.

Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 will be the obvious standout. I don’t need to tell you how successfull Call of Duty 4 and World at War have been, so both developers and gamers are going to be looking forward to this. I’m sure there will be a new trailer at the very least, but perhaps a playable demo will be out.

Assassin’s Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, Dead Rising 2, and a host of other action games will make an appearance as well, but Mass Effect 2 and Dead Rising 2 may not have much in the way of playable content. Mass Effect 2 won’t come out until next year, so I don’t think BioWare will have much to show off by next week. Dead Rising 2 would seem to be something that’s press conference-worthy, but I’ve heard from one of the IGN podcasts that Capcom is hesitant to send over one of its Japanese representatives to America because of the Swine Flu. I personally don’t understand that, as the Swine Flu craze has definitely died down, and the Japanese Capcom could tell Capcom of America what they want revealed if they really couldn’t come over. Of course, the tightly packed convention floor would provide an easy way for the sickness to spread…

During the press conference, Microsoft will probably talk a lot about downloadable content, not only because they don’t have much in the way of first party retail releases lined up for this year, but also because downloadable content is something they talked about last year. I’m sure Xbox Live Primetime, the service that seems to blend TV and video games together, will be talked about. Lately I’ve seen advertisements for it on the Xbox 360 dashboard, and after a year of announcing it, I’m sure Microsoft has some more of it that they would like to show off. DLC for games already released is getting to be a popular trend, as evidenced by the many expansions to Fallout 3 and strong sales of multiplayer map packs for Halo 3 and Call of Duty: World at War. The second Grand Theft Auto IV episode that Rockstar has promised will most likely be shown and dated, as well.

There are many strong games coming to the Xbox 360 in 2009, but most of them are not from Microsoft. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft gives the much-needed spotlight to third party developers this year.
